all the love was hesitated: b-sides
Jul. 10th, 2017 01:10 amI had a couple of first tries for this. I like Cho/Luna, but I haven't thought about them much so it was difficult for me to get a handle at first. I'm pretty okay with the result, but I had two attempts prior.
(One of them was written longhand and isn't typed up yet; I'll edit this post with it when I do.)
Peripherally, Luna knows Cho Chang. She doesn't talk to her father about her, isn't close to anyone else in Ravenclaw, doesn't need to know anyone else to know who Cho is. Cho is two years older than her and the Seeker on the Ravenclaw Quidditch team and has eyes like a dark sky, the sky Luna used to see when her mother would tuck her in at night and draw back the curtains on the ceiling.
Cho has long hair and thin wrists and Luna watches when no one else is, drinking in all that she can. She sits at the common room fire, watching the way the light dances across Cho's face like a halo, as Cho laughs and talks with her friends. The crease of her mouth is something Luna's spent long enough staring at, and she ducks her head down to do her homework again.
*
Cho and Luna both go to DA meetings, but Luna always trails behind the other Ravenclaws when they walk to and fro. Cho always seems too busy talking to her friend anyway, which Luna doesn't terribly mind because Cho's not her friend. Luna knows this.
Still, it's when Luna is following Cho and her friend through the corridors, after the DA meeting and back to Ravenclaw Tower, when Cho glances back at her and then glances again. Those eyes again - Luna pretends not to notice. Eyes the hue of the sky above Hogwarts now, wind cascading like a storm.
"Luna?" Cho says, jolting Luna out of her thoughts. Cho's friend looks cautious - Luna can read it on her face - but Cho's eyes are curious. "It's Luna, right?"
"Um," Luna says, because Cho's voice is gentle and her gaze is on Luna and Luna feels small, like she doesn't belong in this place in the world, needs to be someone bigger. "Yes," she says.
Cho smiles at her. "I'm Cho," she says. Luna resists saying that she knows. "Do you want to walk back to Ravenclaw with us?" Her friend looks put upon, and Luna worries about intruding - but Cho's expression is gentle, and when Luna meets her eyes, she can't think of a reason to say no.
"Sure," Luna says, and Cho's eyes crinkle.
